SURFRIDER PADDLES TO MOKAUEA ISLAND FOR MARCH BEACH CLEANUP

garbage-pile-2Honolulu, Oahu (March 9th, 2010): Come join Surfrider Oahu this Saturday March 13th from 8:30am-11:30am for a unique cleanup and enviro-outreach event at historic Mokauea Island.  In conjunction with Kai Makana Foundation, and sponsors Everpaddle and Larabar, we will start at Sand Island for registration and set off to Mokauea Island, a quarter mile away, by various watercraft. Everpaddle will be providing several stand up paddle boards outfitted with deck bags for trash collection.  Kai Makana will have canoes.  Feel free to bring your own watercraft given that you are competent to trek to the island and back after the cleanup.

Below are  instructions and a link to the map of the Sand Island launch and registration location. It's not at the Sand Island Beach Park, so please read instructions carefully.

Bring: Sun protection, hats or visors, slippers, crocs, old tennis shoes, or tabis for working in the fishpond, and gloves.  Wear clothes that you don't mind getting wet and muddy, and a bottle of water (we have jugs to refill).

Directions: From Nimitz Highway, take Sand Island Access Road until you pass some large storage tanks (on your right side). Go over the bridge and make your first RIGHT onto a small paved road. Follow the road as it makes a sharp right and go all the way down until you see a parking lot. There will probably be cars parked alongside the road. Look for single vehicle parking spaces – you cannot park in the long spaces that are reserved for vehicles with boat trailers. If there are no single spaces available, you must parallel park alongside the entrance road. There is a restroom building on one side of the parking lot. Look for the lineup of outrigger canoes near the water – we will meet near the canoes.
