Happy New Year to our Surfrider ohana - all our members, volunteers and partners. We are so grateful for all that you do to support Surfrider and we want to send a big Mahalo to all those that contributed to our many causes this year. We had some incredible successes and many memorable events. Some of our big accomplishments in 2013 include:
- After the Big Island banned smoking on its beaches and parks last year, the Oahu Chapter helped pass a bill to create Smoke-Free Beaches & Parks on Oahu, and now the Maui Chapter hopes to do the same.
- The Surfrider Quad Club at the University of Hawaii helped pass a ban on EPS foam food service products on its campus, and Oahu and the other chapters will be seeking to reduce the use of toxic EPS Foam products at the state and county levels.
- Statewide, the Hawaii Chapters helped repeal the bill creating the Public Lands Development Corporation (PLDC), a shadowy government agency that would have allowed private corporations to develop public land.
- Another fantastic John Kelly Awards fundraiser party! Check out our Facebook page to see pictures from the event!
Some of our ongoing campaigns include the fight for beach access at Laniakea, the ongoing cases that scrutinize the building of massive new hotels which violate Waikiki's zoning laws for height, density and shoreline setback and support for the campaign to protect Kakaako from being overdeveloped without adequate infrastructure.
We are looking forward to another great year in 2014! We have many ongoing campaigns and many new ones to look forward to. We also wanted to recognize the hard work of this year's Executive Committee as well as welcome the new members of the 2014 Executive Committee:
