Better Tomorrow Speaker Series Hosts Dr. Marcus Eriksen

Featuring a screening of his new film JUNK RAFT

Honolulu, HI: The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Better Tomorrow Speaker Series is partnering with Books & Spirits, Surfrider Foundation, Kokua Hawaii Foundation and an array of sponsors to host a talk and film screening by Dr. Marcus Eriksen at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Wed., Aug. 29, at 7:30pm.  Eriksen is the co-founder of 5Gyres.org, an eco-adventurer and a leading researcher in documenting marine plastic pollution around the world.  He will be signing his new book Junk Raftand premiering his new documentary of the same name at the Royal Hawaiian’s Monarch Ballroom, 2259 Kalakaua Ave.

Marking the 10-year anniversary of the Junk Raft’s landing in Hawaii, Eriksen’s book and documentary capture his 88 days at sea with co-navigator Joel Paschal, as they sailed from California to Hawaii on a raft made of 15,000 plastic bottles. The purpose of the 2600-mile voyage was to build public awareness about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the global issue of marine plastic pollution and the growing movement to reduce single-use plastics here in Hawaii and around the world.

“When Marcus completed his voyage on the Junk Raft in 2008, he became known as an intrepid eco-adventurer who helped publicize the Garbage Patch and the issue of marine plastic pollution,” says Stuart Coleman, Surfrider’s Hawaii Manager and co-founder of BooksAndSpirits.com. “In the ten years since that epic voyage, he has become one of the leaders of the international plastic pollution movement. So we’re thrilled to have him back for the 10thanniversary of that voyage.”

This special event at The Royal Hawaiian on Aug. 29th will feature a talk by Dr. Marcus Ericsen, a screening of his new documentary Junk Raft and a book signing party with the author.
